Monsieur Hire is a maladjusted, balding, middle-aged man living in France. He doesn't like to talk to people. A young woman is murdered and a police detective suspects him, just because his neighbors think he is strange.

*The film was nominated in eight categories at the César Awards, winning only the Award for Best Sound. The film was also nominated for the Golden Palm at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival.
