Autumn Tale / Conte D’Automne

1998 | France | Col. | 112’

Dir.-Scr.: Éric Rohmer | Cast: Béatrice Romand, Marie Rivière, Alain Libolt

Magali, a 45-year-old widow and passionate winegrower, suffers from loneliness since her children moved away. Her best friend, Isabelle, secretly uses a personal ad to find her a partner, while Rosine, her son’s friend, tries to set her up with one of her professors.

In the final installment of the “Tales of the Four Seasons” tetralogy, Rohmer crafts a romantic character-driven comedy, set against the tender, autumnal atmosphere that follows the heat of the summer. Bittersweet misunderstandings melt like grapes pressed into fine wine, and the harvest party becomes the moment when loneliness steps aside and love takes the floor. An everyday story told with great emotional and cinematic depth - revealing the true value of love and friendship.
