Rome, 1980. Writer Goliarda Sapienza sees her magnum opus, The Art of Joy -ten years of work- being rejected by every publisher she has sent it to. She ends up in prison for stealing some jewelry where her mingling with a group of young fellow inmates will change her life. After their release, during the sweltering summer, they continue to meet. Goliarda develops a strong connection with Roberta, a political activist and willful offender -a relationship no one “on the outside” can fully understand, but one that will restore her zest for life and her desire to write.
Inspired by two books of the great Italian author, Mario Martone delivers a moving drama about friendship, female solidarity, and nonconformity. Golino and her co-stars, all wonderful, were awarded from the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists. Official Selection of this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
