FROM THE EDGE OF CITY

Greece – 1998 – Colour – 94’

Dir.- Scr.: Constantine Giannaris | Cin.: Yorgos Argiroiliopoulos | Ed.: Ioanna Spiliopoulou | Mus.: Akis Daoutis | Cast: Stathis Papadopoulos, Costas Kotsianidis, Panayotis Hartomatsidis, Theodora Tzimou, Anestis Polychronidis | Prod.: Anastasios Vasileiou, Dionysis Samiotis

A group of young Pontic Greek immigrants living on the outskirts of Athens, in Menidi, struggles to survive and find their place in their new homeland. Family clashes, petty thefts, hustling in Omonia, drugs, violence and visits to brothels make up their hopeless daily life. Their dream: to find a way out, to conquer the city, to conquer the world…

A gripping social drama revealing the despair of restless, teenage outcasts struggling to find their way in a world without opportunities, and the racism of Greek society. Outstanding performances by real immigrant youths, unseen images from the low suburbs, and a veil of tenderness over a realism that hits hard.

Winner of the Second State Award for Best Film and Best Director at the Thessaloniki Film Festival. Greece’s official submission for the Academy Awards.
