A spectacular psychological thriller, thanks to the masterful visual outcome, as well as to the complex narrative, which weaves the story of a man mentally traumatized in his youth, for murdering a professor after his recruitment by the fascist police. The film, set in the 1930s, uses rich period elements and baroque sets to create a captivating atmosphere while exploring themes of conformity, repressed sexuality, and the foundations of fascism. Although tough due to its non-linear structure, the powerful combination of style and content, as well as G. Delerue's musical score, which creates an atmosphere alternating between classical melodies and more exotic sounds, make it an influential work in the history of cinema.
