Dir.-Scr.: Woody Allen | Cast: Mia Farrow, Denholm Elliott, Elaine Stritch
After a suicide attempt, fragile Lane goes to her family’s country house in Vermont to recover, accompanied by her friend Stephanie. The neighbor, Howard, is in love with her, but Lane longs for Peter, Howard’s writer friend -who, in turn, desires Stephanie. The arrival of Lane’s controlling mother complicates things even further.
In his 16th feature, Woody Allen delivers a dramatic character study filled with tension, unexpressed desires, family disclosures and unhealed emotional wounds. With strong Chekhovian influences, a theatrical tone, powerful dialogue, a mother-daughter dynamic, autumnal melancholy, and the inescapable weight of the past... The film was shot twice (!) with a different cast—Allen himself does not appear.
