All That Heaven Allows

1955 | USA | Col. | 89’

Dir.: Douglas Sirk | Scr.: Peg Fenwick (based on the novel by Edna L. Lee & Harry Lee) | Cast: Jane Wyman, Rock Hudson, Agnes Moorehead

Wealthy widow Cary lives a respectable, lonesome life in 1950s rural New England until she falls in love with her much younger gardener, Ron. Their relationship stirs unrest in the local community and puts her in front of her children and friends, who pressure her to marry someone "of her own class".

Douglas Sirk’s remarkable melodrama (which inspired R.W. Fassbinder and Todd Haynes in their own works) exceeds the clichés of the genre, exposing the hypocrisy and prejudices of small-town America while posing the dilemma: desire or duty? Happiness or social acceptance?

Beautiful Technicolor cinematography by Russell Metty and an outstanding performance by Jane Wyman.
