Amid the turbulent events of May 1968, Milou’s mother dies at the family estate in a village in southwestern France. A general strike, road blocks and political unrest disrupt the funeral arrangements, while the solemn atmosphere is constantly interrupted by news broadcasts on the radio.
Within the setting of the historic Château du Calaoué, where the film was shot, Louis Malle masterfully captures -through tragicomic situations, vivid characters, and witty dialogue- how everyday affairs, whether dramatic or not, are influenced by the momentous events of History. Michel Piccoli is delightful in this mature phase of his career.
