FIVE

1951 | USA | B&W | 91’

Dir.: Arch Oboler | Scr.: Arch Oboler | Cast: William Phipps, Susan Douglas Rubeš, James Anderson.

The world is destroyed in a nuclear holocaust, and the film follows five survivors, a pregnant woman and four men, amongst them a black man and a Nazi. In order to survive they gather in an isolated house on a hillside but tensions within them soon escalate.

In this austere, slow-paced character-driven film, there are no radioactive monsters, only realistic horror, a sense of utter isolation, and psychologically traumatized heroes dealing with a reality beyond imagination. This is the first film about the nuclear apocalypse, made just six years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki!
